CFDA Showcase

CFDA Showcase: Angela Cummings

There is not much we can say about jewelry legend Angela Cummings that hasn't already been said. If you didn't know, this is a woman whose name ranks among greats like Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger, and Elsa Peretti – owing to a over decade spent with Tiffany & Co. (until 1984) creating pieces for the iconic American brand. Born in Austria but raised in the United States, Cummings headed back to Europe to study at the Art Academy in Perugia, Italy, and in 1967 earned degrees in goldsmithing and gemology from Zeichenakademie in Hanau, West Germany. Although she retired in 2003, she couldn't resist the allure of South Sea pearls, and in 2013 joined forces with Assael to design a capsule collection of very special pieces that manage to both highlight the pearl but not overwhelm it. We're honored that Cummings is here on FFR. Look Mom, we made it!

Throughout my career I have been inspired by the sea, flora and both exotic and everyday wildlife.

What’s your idea of ultimate luxury?

Something that is so rare, unique + beautiful that it would have to be discovered…but probably could never be found!

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is…

Having worked with so many beautiful gems throughout my career, I’m not really lusting, but I always love seeing rare gems of every sort.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Dinner with Mallord Turner (J.M.W. Turner English landscape artist) would be wonderful.  He could tell me what inspired his great paintings such as Fishermen At Sea.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

There is so much beautiful jewelry by all of my fellow CFDA Designers…but I’d love a John Brevard leather and metal bracelet for my son, Bruce.

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

My last trip to Alaska! It was so wild, untouched, huge and beautiful that I cannot wait to see it all again…it's definitely inspired my painting!

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

It would be wonderful to be at the FIT Future of Fashion Show to have a crystal ball and see what passion and creativity the next wave of new designers envisions!

If you could be anything other than a jewelry designer, what would it be?

A perfect person and an inspired painter.

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

Sir Derek Jacobi because I just marvel at the magic of British charm…

What’s your spirit animal and explain why.

Throughout my career I have been inspired by the sea, flora and both exotic and everyday wildlife. This makes it impossible for me to say that one from any of the categories is my ‘spirit animal’.

What does it mean to you to be a member of CFDA?

It means a true connection to a group of fellow supportive professionals, who foster excellence in both design and industry practices, as well as becoming dear friends.

CFDA Showcase: Cheryl Finnegan of VSA Designs

It's Friday so that means it's the perfect time to post VSA Designs. Because VSA stands for Virgins, Saints and Angels and because designer Cheryl "Finn" Finnegan, below, looks SO weekend-ready in her headshot. (Red lips and tattoos are two accessories we are very familiar with over here at FFR.) This is jewelry that manages somehow to take the words "gothic", "spiritual", "edgy" and "cheeky" and combine them all in just the right amounts to create something special. Handcrafted in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Mexico City & Rhode Island, this isn't jewelry for the faint of heart, mostly because, we assure you, you're gonna get asked about these pieces when you're wearing them. To us, that's the highest compliment you could hope for. It's Friday, people – red lips for everyone!

It means that I am a peer amongst the finest designers in the industry. Makes me feel proud….and acknowledged.

What's your idea of ultimate luxury?

Luxury is in the details…the finishings and the use of finer materials…of course done in good taste. Thoughtfully designed.

Or there is the luxury of a stress free day  – in a hotel, a comfy blanket, room service, popcorn, and a good movie.

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is...

Rough cut diamonds – in beads and stones!

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Salvador Dali…….because I love an eccentric.  Especially one who is all about dressing up! I imagine we would spend more time making our entrance into the restaurant than we would dine...wearing crowns of course.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

I am a big fan of a sculpted cuff from Robert Lee Morris, but I wouldn’t turn down a little something from Cathy Waterman.

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

Lisbon, Portugal – sooo many details. The tile work – the iron work – the views – the ocean. We stayed in the Palacio Belmonte, built in 1449 and filled with beautifully restored traditional tile work with a curious mix of the owners’ modern art collection. Lisbon has a specific style – it’s not completely gothic, as it is not as ornamental – the architecture is called Manueline. That mixed with Art Nouveau and blue water make for a simple elegance, which something that I aspire to in my designs.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

Chanel. Mostly for the entertainment! The extravagance of the designs, the sets, the history, the models, and to check out the jewelry Karl is wearing.

If you could be anything other than a jewelry designer, what would it be?

I dream in chandeliers! But if I couldn’t be an artist of sorts, I would be a midwife. I love being a mother and the whole experience of childbirth.

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

Harvey Keitel. Did you see him in The Piano? I rest my case.

What's your spirit animal and explain why.

A dolphin. I’m a Pisces with a sixth sense, and I know this is the reason I am so clumsy with my feet – because they should be fins!

What does it mean to you to be a member of CFDA?

CFDA Showcase: Katrin Zimmermann of Ex Ovo

You know why we like Ex Ovo? Precisely because it's outside of our comfort zone. It's usually day in, day out: precious gems, heavy metals, blah blah blah...but the sculptural aesthetic and unusual materials that designer Katrin Zimmerman brings to the table gets our motors running. We're talking leather, rubber, silver, plastic – components that can be used for applications far outside of traditional jewelry. Zimmerman's inspiration comes from her extensive travel and international background: she was born in Germany, and educated in Switzerland, England and China. After studying Chinese and Archaeology, she decamped to NYC in 1991 and has called the City home since then. Now based out of Harlem, Zimmerman bases her designs on both the Far East and the idea of reduction – paring down a design to its basic elements, whether it's  stone or an essence. (We are not surprised that mega architect Zaha Hadid is a fan of Ex Ovo. This is no doubt a line admired by those who work in form and function.)

It means being appreciated in this crazy effort to make some beauty that lasts.

What's your idea of ultimate luxury?

TIME WITH MY DAUGHTER! That, and a vineyard in Umbria – well anywhere in Italy really, where I can stick my toes in the earth and grow stuff.

The gemstone you are currently lusting after is…

A big, overly high cabochon ruby that looks like a fat juicy gumdrop!

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Alberto Giacometti. His sculptures have been so influential in how I approach my design. I’m not sure how much he would say to me! We could eat a nice cheese fondue though, or goat cheese and Bündnerfleisch.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another CFDA member, what would it be?

Everything from everyone! Are you kidding? We all have sharp tools with us at all times!  :)

Where's the last place you visited that inspired your creativity? Give us some details!

A street in East Harlem, where I saw a beautiful life-size flowering tree crocheted to a chain link fence. I’ve seen more pieces of what must be the same artist since, and I just love the whole concept of bringing out beauty anywhere. Just like what I’m trying to do.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, what would it be and why?

Iris van Herpen. Love her work, her design philosophy, her technological wizardry, her uncompromising excellence! Also, that means I would be in Europe!

If you could be anything other than a jewelry designer, what would it be?

Ah – a professor of design.  But then, I am that already too!

Be honest – who is your celebrity crush?

Obama! I just realized it last week, I have a serious crush on that man. Sorry, Michelle!

What's your spirit animal and explain why.

It is the bear. Grounded, protective, lumbering, but lightning quick when needed.  Come too near my offspring, I’ll chew your head off. Sleeps LONG periods of time, and then wakes to intense beauty in spring. Cuddly too, and a bit overweight. Sigh.

What does it mean to you to be a member of CFDA?

It means being part of a community that appreciates and actively champions design. It means being appreciated in this crazy effort to make some beauty that lasts. It means that I have a chance to leave my industry a better place than I found it. It means I get to change the world!
