Tamar Kelman of Arik Kastan

Can we all just acknowledge that mostly everyone's vision for their current collection is a 'modern take on an old favorite' or some other schtick that lends itself to a contemporary interpretation of a classic? Allow us to climb off of our soapbox real quick before giving credit where credit is due. Ever since 2008, Tamar, the chic and lovely Los Angeles-based creative force behind Arik Kastan, has been churning out incredible pieces with that certain 'is it or isn't it?' factor when it comes to confirming the vintage-ness of the collection. Much like the perfect beaded dress, any navette ring (some of our personal favorites) from AK will intrigue the most discerning of collectors with its ability to transcend the obvious and somehow embody the magic of estate classics. As avid hoarders of the good stuff ourselves, we are here to say that they've found fans in FFR.

You know that saying ‘Don’t get high off your own supply?’ Too late.

How long have you been designing and what did you do prior?

I launched Arik Kastan in the U.S. in 2009. Prior to launching Arik Kastan, I represented a lifestyle apparel designer and a fashion jewelry designer, both were based in Israel. I handled their business, sales and marketing in the United States.

Name another fine jewelry designer that you are a fan of and tell us why.

Can I name a few? Selim Mouzannar: Gorgeous, soulful jewelry with amazing details. Sylva & Cie: Bold designs and perfect workmanship. Jacquie Aiche: Edgy, sexy cool.

Gemstone you can’t get enough of?

Opals, labradorite, and turquoise.

What’s your favorite piece that you’ve recently purchased?

You know that saying “don’t get high off your own supply?” Too late. (Ed Note: We have no idea what you're referring to...)

What is the most sentimental piece of jewelry that you own and what's the backstory?

As a gift, Arik re-designed my engagement ring. He had complete free rein to do whatever he wanted with it, so finally seeing the finished piece was like receiving it for the first time again.

Why do you think people are becoming so comfortable purchasing fine jewelry online?

I think what has happened is that little by little people have built up a greater level of trust in buying online across the board, and that’s trickled over to jewelry and luxury.

Next time FFR is visiting your home base, where do we eat?

Gjelina! Still my favorite.

Best cocktail bar? (For a sophisticated sip AND ponying up to a pub – we are Geminis, so we need both options.)

Chateau Marmont is always great. Perch downtown is also fun with gorgeous views.  The Village Idiot (on Melrose) is a good pub with great food.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day?

I wish I could walk or bike but living in LA that’s just not possible.

Top 5 bands in your playlist?

Bob Marley, Kendrick Lamar, A Tribe Called Quest, Grateful Dead, all others tie for 5th.

Celebrity Crush?!

Charlie Hunnam (sorry babe!)

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Bottega Large Convertible Bag.

Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter?

Instagram. Hands down.

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

Lierac. I would bathe in this oil if I could. Subtle, Fresh, Soft.

If you could do anything else for a living, what would it be and why?

Something that would allow me to be at the beach all day.

Where’s the last destination you visited that inspired your work?

Tel Aviv always inspires me. Just something in the air. Plus, Arik and I can really get into things together and some new magic always is created.

Flats or heels? (And what’s your current favorite pair?)

My Chloe Susanna studded booties are my go to. I think I need another pair. Otherwise I end up in my shell toes, high tops, or flip flops. At night – heels, always.

You’re on a shopping mission in your hometown. Where is your go-to for the perfect party outfit? Housewarming gift?

Perfect party outfit – Curve. Perfect housewarming – Jonathan Adler.

If we were filming the reality show of your life, what would your tagline be? (Think Real Housewives!)

I’m not a tag-line kind of girl. That would be my tagline.
