Look, we love shopping for jewelry in person, but sometimes all you want is a perfectly curated online experience that looks beautiful, is easy to navigate, and reveals the backstory of each designer and his or her process. And well, you know, one that you can peruse in your pajamas. Stone & Strand – founded by the elegant and whip-smart Nadine McCarthy Kahane – is that very oasis for bauble lovers who like to shop from the comfort of home (or office or airplane or coffee shop). Jam-packed with some of the hottest names in jewelry, as well as up-and-comers, vintage, and estate selections; the two-year old site makes it easy for both aficionados and newbies to find that perfect little something. With offerings like personal shopping, custom design and editorial must-haves (put together by Creative Director Brooke Magnaghi), S&S is definitely a page worth bookmarking. Apologies in advance to your bank account.

I first pierced my ears as a teenager in a remote Peruvian marketplace just after I finished the Inca Trail. I felt like I deserved a dose of glamour after five days of trekking and hiking in the mountains.

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

I both live and work in SoHo, New York and therefore spend a lot of time within the radius of a few blocks. Fortunately there are many options to choose from and new places opening up all the time. My all-time favorite is a little Spanish place called Boqueria – they have great wine, and an amazing steak. I probably end up there at least once a week, usually on a Sunday night or weekday evening.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry, what would it be?

If budget were no object, I would probably commission a bespoke piece from either Hemmerle or Marilyn Cooperman. Hemmerle’s Delicious Jewels collection is incredible – I’m obsessed with the pea brooch! (Image above.)

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

I used to live in Switzerland and very quickly fell in love with the country. It’s one of the prettiest places on earth, and I try to go back as much as possible. There’s amazing skiing, and in the summer, swims in the lakes, wild flowers and beautiful mountain walks. There’s a little mountain church called Mario Botta tucked away high up in the hills that we came across on one of our road trips across the country. It has a contemporary design set in a calm meadow alongside a tiny hamlet and the juxtaposition of old and new is stunning. Next on my list is the newly renovated Le Grand Bellevue in Gstaad. The interior looks simply gorgeous.

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

I recently read Tuesdays with Morrie – a nonfiction book about a journalist who reconnects with his sociology professor who is dying from ALS. I found their conversations about life to be very thought provoking and inspiring.

Secret/favorite spot for cocktails at a trade show (and what’s your go-to drink?)

We spend longer at the Couture show in Las Vegas compared to any other tradeshow, and after a long day spent walking around indoors, a cocktail outside is a must, preferably by a pool. At the Wynn hotel the Parasol bar is a yearly pit stop – and I usually order a gin martini with olives.

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is . . .

I’ve always loved turquoise and now that the Sleeping Beauty mine in Arizona has closed they feel even more precious.

It’s your birthday and your favorite flower arrangement arrives – what does it look like?

I adore the effect of a wild flower bouquet filled with garden roses, purple lisianthus flowers, veronica perennials, ranunculus and of course peonies.

What’s your favorite piece that purchased or received in the last year and why?

One of our customers bought the Alison Lou “happy and sad” face ring for his fiancé – as a promise that he would be with her through both good and bad times.

I loved the sentiment so much that I also bought one for myself – there’s always ups and downs when you run a business, and this ring helps to remind me on a daily basis why I love being in the jewelry industry.

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

My guilty secret is that I don’t work out. However, on the rare occasion that I do – I attempt to go for a run along the Hudson River Park. It usually turns into a nice leisurely walk.

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

I’ve always been obsessed with jewelry, and have been fortunate to have lived in and travelled to many exotic locales. I first pierced my ears as a teenager in a remote Peruvian marketplace just after I finished the Inca Trail. I felt like I deserved a dose of glamour after five days of trekking and hiking in the mountains. It cost less than a dollar, and this included a pair of handmade earrings – an absolute bargain!

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Sculpture is one of my favorite mediums and I am a huge fan of the British sculptor Antony Gormley. We would hike from installation to installation, and have a classic picnic together at the end of the day.

What is the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the backstory.

Jewelry is extremely personal and the pieces that I treasure most are the few pieces that I received from my grandmother. In particular, there is a simple gold and jade necklace that I am really fond of because I nearly lost it! While I was at college I decided the safest place to store my jewelry collection was in my laundry bag, and of course the necklace subsequently ended up in a long wash cycle with some bed sheets. The fact that it survived (although the case was shredded to pieces) really speaks to the long lasting value of jewelry, although I certainly don’t intend on repeating the experiment!

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day?

I am a terrible driver – one of the reasons why I love living in NYC! I live within walking distance of the office, and find that not having a commute adds so much to my quality of life. Ask me again in the middle of winter and I might have a different answer!

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

Nouvelle Vague, Lana Del Rey, Goldroom, Bibio and Velvet Underground.

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

We would go to a nice restaurant ;)

Be honest – who’s your celebrity crush?!

I tend to have celebrity girl crushes – it’s all about the fashion for me. Diane Kruger is an all time favorite, but I also love seeing red carpet photos of Emma Watson, Felicity Jones and Kendall Jenner.

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would have to be a large tan tote bag – one that I can pile everything into. Perhaps something from Lanvin or Celine, with a Fendi Mini Fur Monster Keychain attached.

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

Jo Malone Orange Blossom – light, beautiful and summery.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, which would it be and why?

Any of Alexander McQueen’s shows – how spectacular!

Tell us your beauty secrets!

I have definitely had to step up my beauty regime in New York, life in London required far less grooming! I’ve discovered Crest Strips, weekly manicure appointments, and while this isn’t strictly in the category I firmly believe that Diptyque candles are essential for my wellbeing.

Signature nail polish and/or lipstick shade for a night on the town?

Red lips and dark grey nails. My personal style philosophy is to mix old with the new.

Jaimie Geller

She's a wife, mother of three – count 'em! – THREE beautiful boys, and owner of her namesake slice of designer jewelry heaven in Pacific Palisades, California. Maid, tutor, chauffeur, or boss...whichever hat Jaimie Geller is wearing, we guarantee it's McQueen.

I’m a diamond girl. Period.

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

Giorgio Baldi (in Santa Monica). Not just the best restaurant in my ‘hood...I'll say top three for all of LA. Not sure what you'll eat, but I'm having a giant glass of Barolo with a plate of agnolotti with white truffle. Anything with truffle. And the Nutella crepes for dessert.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another jeweler, what would it be?

Well, I carry all different designers in my store and, of course, I think they are the best designers out there. I buy jewelry for myself from all of them.

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

Maui. My husband and I have been going there since we started dating 16 years ago. I can't say it's the most glamorous place, but it feels like home. And now we bring our three boys there.

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

I wish I could say it wasn't so, but with all the kids it's hard to find time to read. Fifty Shades of Grey. Yup. I admitted it out loud. Fifty Shades is the last book I read. [Ed note: While we can't condone it, we applaud her admittance. Jaimie's candor is one of our favorite things about her.]

Secret/favorite spot for cocktails at a trade show (and what’s your go-to drink?)

Don't have a secret or favorite spot. But my go to is champagne. I'm simple and too picky with wine so champagne it is. Unless there's good wine.

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is . . .

I'm a diamond girl. Period.

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

Pilates. Doesn't ruin my blow dry.

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

It was a diamond heart necklace from my in-laws’ store, which we eventually bought from them and gutted it . . . and now it's our store. Since we opened our store my first thing I got for myself was my Jacquie Aiche finger bracelet. It made my hand feel sexy.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Banksy. Explanation too obvious to have to explain.

Take a picture of the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the back story.

One is a bracelet by Jemma Wynne with my family’s initials on it. I ordered it right after I had the my third baby. I had been lusting for it but couldn't get it until the baby was born and now I wear it every day. The second is a necklace by Andrea Fohrman. The big round disc says J+M (Jaimie + Michael) and then there are three charms each with the phase of the moon of the night each of my children are born. I always have a special necklace I wear every day, and this is my newest one.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day?

My giant GMC Denali. Fits eight adults comfortably. This is my life with three sons...

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

My kids honestly dictate any music I am listening to these days, so there's a lot of One Direction and Taylor Swift. But we all love Bob Marley on Pandora! My kids literally ask for the "reggae-mon" Pandora station to go to bed.

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

Lately, it's Lamb chops, green beans and mashed potatoes.

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A Birkin. Not too original but don't think i could ever get sick of it and you said the rest of my life.

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

An oil called 1509. Clean, fresh, sweet. I mix it in my Jergens lotion every morning. And there isn't a day that goes by that someone doesn't compliment how I smell. I honestly don't smell it anymore. (By the way, we sell it at my store, and people comment everyday that the store smells so good too.)

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, which would it be and why?

Isabel Marant. Because I actually buy and wear the clothes. And Alexander McQueen because it's so dramatic and over the top and I wouldn't ever wear the clothes. Ooh! Or Chanel because Karl seems to always make a major spectacle.

Tell us your beauty secrets (think: can’t-live-without makeup and skincare)

My facialist - Vanessa Hernandez. That's all you need to know. I hate makeup and she makes it possible that I don't have to wear it everyday. And I can't live without eyelash extensions... Sarah Maxwell does mine. Life changer. Oh and if I do need to go somewhere I feel I need to wear makeup- Kerri Malouf does my makeup because I'm very makeup application challenged.

Signature nail polish and/or lipstick shade for a night on the town?

Nail polish - I have 5 flavors. Ballet Slippers, Smoking Hot, Merino Cool, Malaga Wine and Chinchilly.

Duha Al-Ramadhan

Upon our first meeting at The Peninsula Hotel rooftop in Beverly Hills, we knew the jewelry industry was in for something great. Duha Al-Ramadhan has, in one short year, created a curated retail destination that quickly drew support from American and European designers clamoring for space in her sleek glass displays. You don't have to go to Kuwait to see all Aubade has to offer – like Anita Ko, Jennifer Meyer and Carolina Bucci among many others – but we definitely think a trip is in order. (And if you go, please save some space for us in your suitcase.)

Duha in Rolex, Cartier, and Jacquie Aiche on the opening night of her store, Aubade.

The Maldives! With each visit, you always feel like it’s your first time there.
— Duha Al-Ramadhan

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

Fauchon Café, a Parisian eatery in the heart of Kuwait City. We’d have the Quinoa and Pumpkin salad, Chicken Caesar Sandwich, Beef Fondu and Salmon Plancha. We’d finish the meal with Fauchon’s signature mille feuille and raspberry tart.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another jeweler, what would it be?

I’d definitely go for another Madagscar ring from Eugenie Niarchos’s fine jewelry line Venyx. I currently own the Rainbow Madagascar Ring and am obsessed with it, so now I’m eyeing the Pearl and Ruby version.

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

The Maldives! With each visit, you always feel like it’s your first time there. It’s one of those locations where you genuinely feel complete and utter serenity, so it never gets old or boring.

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

I have a habit of rereading my favorite classic books of all time. The last book I read happened to be George Orwell’s 1984, one of the most fascinating fictional stories about a dystopian future ever told.

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is . . .

Always emeralds! I’m so enthralled by the fire in the green of the stone, and they’re known to bring good luck, so that’s more reason to love them! I’d love to have a beautiful pair of emerald earrings to add to my collection.

It’s your birthday and your favorite flower arrangement arrives – what does it look like?

I love simple and modern arrangements that consist of a single flower type. A bouquet of pink tulips or a vase of purple orchids would be perfect.

What’s your favorite piece that you made in the last year and why? (photo, please!)

Since I don’t design jewelry just yet, I’m going to go with the favorite piece that I had commissioned for myself in the last year – my 3.5ct Colombian emerald solitaire ring that Anita Ko personally designed for me.

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

My favorite workout is circuit training, where you do a series of intense exercises that combine cardio and weight training in short intervals. It allows me to get more out of my workout for a shorter amount of time – perfect for my super busy schedule!

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

Cartier’s charity “Love” bracelet that consists of a mini Cartier Love ring on a knotted pink silk cord.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

John Lennon! I have always been fascinated by his music and career, first as a member of The Beatles and then as a solo artist, and I feel he paved the way to a movement of one love and peace. So to be able to sit with him and hear him speak his thoughts would be a dream.

What is the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the back story.

I have two pieces of jewelry that I absolutely love and that mean so much to me. First is my Jennifer Meyer letter “A” disc necklace that was gifted to me by my best friends during my baby shower (A is my son’s initial). The second is a raw emerald necklace customized by Jacquie Aiche. A few years ago when my husband went to Colombia, he spent hours picking out the perfect raw Colombian emerald for me, as he knows my love for them. It sat there for over a year before I finally decided to ask Jacquie to set the stone on a necklace for me, and it quickly became a favorite.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day? (Tell us about your car, motorcycle, bicycle, taxi, Uber, skateboard...)

As much as I’d love to say bicycle, unfortunately the weather in Kuwait restricts us to driving cars since it gets scorching hot in the summer. I drive a black Mercedes G-Class, which is quite a tough car – perfect for someone like myself, a notoriously “clumsy” driver.

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

The Fray, Kings of Leon, Seether, OneRepublic, and Led Zeppelin.

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

Fusilli pasta in a fresh homemade chili tomato sauce, mixed with olives, mushrooms, and carrots.

Be honest – who’s your celebrity crush?!

Hate to admit this, but the list is never ending! I’ll keep it short and stick to Leonardo Dicaprio (post-Titanic!) – for his intense and deep characters he keeps portraying on screen; Joaquin Phoenix - for his eccentricities; and Joe Maganiello - for being the ultimate man’s man.

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The Kelly bag (size 35cm) by Hermes. It has the perfect number of compartments on the inside to keep everything organized, the leather is soft and ages beautifully, and it has a long shoulder strap that allows you to carry the bag on your shoulder for when you get tired of carrying it by hand.

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

Chloe’s signature scent “Chloé Eau de Parfum”. It’s breezy, fresh, and spring-inspired.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, which would it be and why?

Chanel - need I even say why? It’s not so much about loving the brand, but loving the extremes that Karl Lagerfeld goes to to present the line so creatively. Whether it’s a supermarket or a brasserie, Karl’s attention to detail is impeccable, and he sets a beautiful stage and creative setting for all his shows.

Tell us your beauty secrets (think: can’t-live-without makeup and skincare)

I can’t live without my signature cat-eye liner, which I wear on a daily basis without fail. I use MAC black gel to achieve the perfect cat-eye. For skincare, I’m obsessed with organic products; I always try to make sure I minimize my body’s exposure to unnecessary and harmful chemicals as much as possible. My favorite brands are Kora Organics by Miranda Kerr ,and as of late, Bahraini-based Green Bar Inc. I also always moisturize my body with Elemis Nourishing Milk Bath.

Signature nail polish and/or lipstick shade for a night on the town?

Signature Nail polish – Essie’s Marshmallow (pale white). Signature Lipstick – Tom Ford’s Pink Dusk.
